Newcastle United will face Chelsea for the second time in three days on Wednesday, this time in the Carabao Cup.

Eddie Howe’s side travelled to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday but lost the match 2-1 as Newcastle United’s poor run of form continued.

The Magpies have a chance at instant redemption, though, when they take on Chelsea again in the Carabao Cup at St. James’ Park on Wednesday.

Newcastle are still looking to win their first major trophy since 1955 and they would have a great chance of doing so in the League Cup if they can get past the London club.

Newcastle vs Chelsea team news

Howe has revealed that the groin strain that ruled Anthony Gordon out of the weekend’s trip to Chelsea is not as serious as feared and he could even make a return in Wednesday’s game.

“He has been for a scan,” the manager said.

“We are hopeful the injury isn’t serious, let’s see how he is today.

It was in training on Friday, nothing serious, sometimes you get these things from time to time.

“There is a chance he could make Wednesday, but we have to make the right decision.”

However, Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles all remain sidelined.

Chelsea have a fully fit squad available.

Prediction

Things haven’t been going well for Newcastle in recent weeks but Wednesday offers a chance to turn those fortunes around.

Chelsea may have won on Sunday but it was a close-run result and Newcastle showed they are capable of beating them.

Boosted by a home crowd and potentially up against a weakened Chelsea, this could be the galvanising result Howe needs.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea.
