Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided an update on Anthony Gordon’s fitness.

The 23-year-old missed Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday. Anthony Gordon was in attendance at Stamford Bridge, but was not named in the squad due to a groin issue he sustained in training on Friday.

Newcastle United really struggled without Gordon, who is yet to feature since signing his new contract.

Eddie Howe believes the new contract will help Gordon get back to his best, but that theory is yet to be put to the test.

There were fears that it could be a while before we see Gordon again, which was massively concerning ahead of the Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea followed by Arsenal at home in the Premier League.

Fortunately, Eddie Howe has provided a positive injury update on Gordon.

Eddie Howe has addressed the media ahead of Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup fourth round tie against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

He has provided an update on Gordon, and hinted that he actually has a chance of being involved against the Blues at St James’ Park.

“He has been for a scan,” he said.

“We are hopeful the injury isn’t serious, let’s see how he is today.

It was in training on Friday, nothing serious, sometimes you get these things from time to time.

“There is a chance he could make Wednesday, but we have to make the right decision.”

Newcastle have a big decision to make over Gordon

Gordon has a chance of being involved against Chelsea. However, the Magpies are also aware of the looming game against Arsenal on Saturday, and will be mindful of not rushing the winger back.

The problem is that the Carabao Cup game is arguably more important for Newcastle United. It is pivotal that we advance to the next round of the competition, as the Magpies aim to end their trophy drought.

Howe will want to put out as strong a team as possible, and that best XI will always include Gordon. We struggled without him on Sunday, with Harvey Barnes putting in a poor performance against Chelsea.

It all depends on how close to 100% Gordon is. If he is fully fit and over this groin problem then he should play against Chelsea. If not then the club should err on the side of caution and allow him to fully recover for the Arsenal game.
