Newcastle United will take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium in March.

It is the second Carabao Cup final for Eddie Howe’s side in three seasons. This time around, it looks like Newcastle United must do it the hard way if they want to win their first silverware since 1969.

Newcastle will play Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final after they convincingly beat Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Thursday.

St James’ Park was electric, and Newcastle fans were in fine voice against Arsenal – they knew what they had to do to get the players motivated for the game. Even a Newcastle legend had his say on how well they played. Alan Shearer called Bruno Guimaraes ‘brilliant’ after his performance as captain.

Arsenal fans were in awe of Alexander Isak, despite the Swede failing to score on the night. With their Carabao Cup final opponents now confirmed, Newcastle fans have now taken to social media to react.

Newcastle fans react to playing Liverpool in the Carabao Cup

Liverpool are the defending Carabao Cup champions and will have the chance to win their first trophy under Arne Slot in March. Newcastle’s chances of winning the trophy have reduced after drawing Liverpool, but the Magpies are more suited to being underdogs.

Newcastle’s trophy history is something fans would rather not address, but a cup win could give them something to shout about.

Toon fans have now taken to X to react to the announcement.

“Play like we did vs Arsenal and PSG and we win. Believe, and it will happen. We can beat anyone on a good day. Let that day be Sunday, March 16,” one fan said. While another added: “It’s a final – whoever we play will be on top form. We know we can go toe-to-toe against LFC – time to finally convert that into a win. And if Joelinton is just one card away from a ban, the end of this month feels like a good time to pick it up.”

This fan highlighted Liverpool’s Premier League title charge, they said: “We can do it, it’ll not be easy by any stretch, and I’ll be a bag of nerves, but the team are more experienced and more hungry, Liverpool will have their minds on other things I think.”

“I’m feeling fantastic the final I wanted it will be fantastic two brilliant fan bases,” said this excited Newcastle fan.

Another fan added: “See if you’re going to win your first trophy in a very long time you may as well win it against the best team in the country it’ll make it even sweeter.”

Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “This is our time. Liverpool will think they just have to turn up. They’re in for a nasty surprise this time. We learned a lot about them in the 3-3 draw. Eddie will have the lads ready for this one.”

Newcastle must relish being the underdogs against Liverpool

It is a familiar story for Newcastle fans, underdogs for a huge cup game. It feels very different to the 2023 Carabao Cup final, however.

Howe has built a completely different team this time around in comparison to what he had – the likes of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento did not play in the last final, they could be the difference makers in March.

Newcastle have already played Liverpool this season and will play them again before the cup final. Newcastle travel to Anfield at the end of February for what will be a teaser for the final.

Either way, domestic form goes out the window when it’s a cup final, the Magpies have not won against Liverpool since 2015, but will be beaming with confidence when they travel to Wembley.
