The challenge for Newcastle United is to build a squad capable of challenging on a number of fronts.

While that is not easy given the FFP constraints the club are working under, recent signings have brought more options to Newcastle.

Indeed, Sandro Tonali provides more quality in midfield while Harvey Barnes and a rejuvenated Anthony Gordon offer cover and competition to the likes of Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson, Joelinton and Alexander Isak up front.

Now, it appears Kieran Trippier will have something to think about.

Though the undisputed first-choice under Eddie Howe, the England international will seemingly soon have competition.

Southampton defender Tino Livramento now looks close to signing for the club and some fresh insight into his thoughts has now emerged.

How Tino Livramento feels about his squad role at Newcastle

According to the Daily Mail, the 20-year-old is happy to undertake something of a back-up role this season.

Livramento is only just coming back from a long-term injury, so that kind of task will at least allow him to both work on his fitness and get to grips with the manner in which Howe deploys his team.

Either way, it’s certainly not as if the former Chelsea youngster won’t be in line for minutes.

Those behind the scenes at Newcastle are believed to have accepted Trippier cannot play every game next season, particularly with an increased schedule with the Champions League back on the agenda.

The kind of move that works for all involved

It’s hard to see a loser here.

Clearly, every player would want regular action but Livramento gets to work on his fitness while adapting to a new style of play in a new city.

To be able to work under Trippier while realistically being able to play games for what was one of the best teams in the Premier League last season can hardly be a bad thing.

Described as “excellent” by Gareth Southgate for his form before his injury, it’s all about getting back on track to getting that kind of recognition.
