It has been a difficult first season at Newcastle United for Will Osula.

He joined the Magpies in the summer transfer window, with Newcastle signing Osula from Sheffield United for an initial £10million.

The youngster was always seen as a project player – someone who was not the finished article but had the potential to flourish at St James’ Park in the coming years under the guidance of Eddie Howe.

With seven games of the season to go, Newcastle United fans have not seen much of Osula. He has not started a single Premier League game, while his only Toon goal came in the FA Cup win over League Two side Bromley.

Newcastle fans want Osula to play more, but it feels unlikely that they will get their wish as the Magpies aim to secure Champions League qualification.

Newcastle United expect big things from Will Osula

However, the 21-year-old’s time will hopefully still come.

Newcastle believe Osula has improved, and the Athletic’s Chris Waugh has provided fresh details regarding how the Danish attacker is viewed behind the scenes.

As part of a Q&A for the Athletic, Waugh wrote: “The belief inside Newcastle is that Howe and his coaching staff will extract the maximum from Osula in time.”

Newcastle United presented with Osula dilemma

With Osula’s first season as a Newcastle United player edging towards its conclusion, the club must decide what is next.

They have two options for the 2025/26 campaign.

Newcastle could loan Osula out and ensure he gets regular gametime. If he can find an environment where he can play consistently and start scoring plenty of goals then it will do wonders for his confidence.

Alternatively, Newcastle could keep Osula at St James’ Park. He could benefit more from training day to day with better players, learning from a world class striker in Alexander Isak.

It is a difficult decision, and one that could be complicated further by the Magpies signing another striker.

That is part of their summer plan, with Matheus Cunha a target for Newcastle. He is a versatile player who can operate as a striker.

However, Newcastle are unlikely to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town. He has also been linked with a move to Tyneside, but is expected to join a club where he will be a guaranteed starter.
