When Alexander Isak was unable continue against Brentford, Eddie Howe turned to Callum Wilson.
After scoring for Newcastle United in the first half, Isak had to be substituted due to a groin issue.
Eddie Howe made the change in the 66th minute, with Callum Wilson coming on for his ninth Premier League appearance of the season.
It was far from an inspiring cameo from the 33-year-old, who has not scored a Premier League goal since May 4th 2024.

Newcastle United fans call for Will Osula to play after Callum Wilson cameo
While Wilson struggled to have an impact on the game, Will Osula remained an unused substitute.
The 21-year-old did not make an appearance, as Newcastle beat Brentford thanks to Sandro Tonali’s incredible goal.
Despite the victory, a lot of Newcastle United supporters on X (formerly known a Twitter) believe that now is the time for Osula to replace Wilson as Isak’s understudy.
One fan asked: “Surely it’s time we bring Osula on instead of Wilson? Can’t remember the last time Wilson offered us anything.”
“Genuinely baffled how Wilson gets chosen over Osula,” wrote another Newcastle United supporter.
This Toon fan added: “Wilson has been a great player for us but can’t come on to replace Isak, he’s lost all pace and needs support. Osula might be raw but he’s got pace to give us an outlet.”
A fourth member of the Toon Army posted: “Massive win but Callum Wilson just doesn’t have it in him anymore. I would use these last 9 games to give a launchpad to Osula ahead of next season.”
This supporter is also keen for Osula to play ahead of Wilson, writing: “Rather we started to give Osula the last 20/15 mins off the bench than Wilson. Hasn’t offered anything off the bench since he’s been back, no hold up, no attacking threat. Looks like he can’t be bothered unless he starts.”
Finally, another Newcastle fan wrote on X: “Wilson coming on for Isak always just makes me feel a bit ugh. I’d prefer Osula on, he’s got more legs and I’d like him to get game times. I haven’t seen anything from Wilson since he’s back.”
Eddie Howe unlikely to put his trust in Will Osula this season
While Osula was one of the stars of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup celebrations, the young striker has had limited opportunities since his £10million arrival from Sheffield United.
He has made 15 appearances so far this season, with his last outing coming in the Magpies’ 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. His only starts have been against lower league opposition in the cup, with his only goal coming against Bromley.
It feels as if Osula does not fully have Eddie Howe’s trust at this moment in time. The Newcastle United manager continues to turn to the more experienced Wilson, despite the number nine struggling to have a positive impact.
While Wilson is not playing particularly well, it feels certain that he will continue to be Isak’s understudy for the rest of the season – as long as there is still something to play for.
Supporters are desperate to see Osula get an opportunity. His enthusiasm is infectious, while he brings boundless energy whenever he plays. That is a contrast to Wilson, who has not looked sharp since his comeback.
But with Champions League qualification still on the line, it would be a major surprise if Howe suddenly decided to put his faith in a project player who is still very raw.
