How Eddie Howe has really reacted to Amanda Staveley leaving Newcastle United

It has been a summer of change for Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, and it might not be over.

So much has happened at St James’ Park since the Magpies’ last competitive outing. The PSR fiasco resulted in Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson being sold, and their departures were followed by the appointment of Paul Mitchell as sporting director.

Mitchell’s arrival coincided with Dan Ashworth leaving for Man United, but he was not the most high profile exit.

That came when it was announced that Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi would be leaving Newcastle United. They have sold their shares in the club to PIF and the Reuben brothers, as the Toon project moves into its next phase.

Eddie Howe hit hard by Amanda Staveley exit

Staveley was always going to leave Newcastle at some point, but news of her departure really shocked Toon fans.

It came completely out of the blue, and resulted in wonderful tributes to Staveley and her husband Ghodoussi. They had a seismic impact during their time on Tyneside, fighting extremely hard to buy the club from Mike Ashley and bringing PIF to the table. Whatever success Newcastle go on to have, Staveley and Ghodoussi will have played a part in it.

Newcastle will lose Staveley’s PR talent, while Eddie Howe is losing a trusted ally. He had a close relationship with Staveley, who was always a keen supporter of the Toon boss.

And, according to the Telegraph, Howe has been hit hard by news of Staveley’s departure from St James’ Park.

Hopefully Howe is not next to leave Newcastle United

Following Staveley and Ghodoussi’s exit, a fresh spotlight has been cast on Howe’s role as Newcastle United manager.

Two of his allies are gone, while there are new people in positions of power. That includes sporting director Paul Mitchell, whose arrival was just as out of the blue as Staveley’s move away.

Newcastle were happy they kept Mitchell’s appointment secret, while the Telegraph add that Howe only found out about the former Monaco man coming in the day before it was announced.

Their dynamic could very much shape Howe’s future at St James’ Park, while there is the added complication of the England job.

The FA are interested in replacing Gareth Southgate with Howe, and it could be a difficult opportunity for the 46-year-old to turn down.

Pundits such as Jamie Carragher have backed Howe to get the job, but Newcastle’s position is strengthened by the fact he secretly signed a new contract last year. It is also a contract that does not include a release clause, which makes the Magpies’ position even stronger.

But that position of strength could be overpowered if Howe decides that he wants to take up the FA’s offer – assuming one comes his way.

In a summer of change at Newcastle United, there is still a chance of one more shock departure.
