Newcastle United will now have a major fear behind the scenes as England lose Euro 2024 final

It was a familiar feeling for Newcastle United fans, as England failed to win Euro 2024 and lift a trophy on Sunday night.

The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain, as the wait for football to come home continues. England have not won anything since 1966, and it will be 60 years of hurt by the time the 2026 World Cup arrives.

For Newcastle United, their trophy cabinet is just as bare. The last trophy Newcastle won was in 1969, and they have not lifted domestic silverware since 1955.

It was heartbreaking to see England fall short on Sunday night, and it is a feeling that Toon fans know all too well.

How England’s loss could impact Newcastle United

Reaching the final was incredible, but England have come up short. Gareth Southgate has come up short.

There will now be major questions about his future, with his FA contract due to expire in December.

Throughout Euro 2024, it has felt like the writing has been on the wall for Southgate. However, that did change after the semi final win over Netherlands.

That 2-1 triumph resulted in reports that the FA would like to keep Southgate as England manager – whether they won the Euros final or not.

Sadly, they did not win the final, and that has to increase the likelihood of the Three Lions changing manager. And that could lead them to Eddie Howe.

Newcastle United will hope to keep Eddie Howe

If England do decide to look for a new manager, they will certainly take a look at Eddie Howe. Geordie Boot Boys were told earlier this year that Howe is near the top of the FA’s list of possible Southgate replacements, and they could be consulting that list very soon.

It feels like the right time for England and Southgate to part ways. He has come up short at another major tournament, and public perception has started to shift. A lot of criticism has been volleyed at Southgate, despite him getting to another final with the Three Lions. Sure, England were not convincing on their route to the final, but you have got to be in it to win it…

Given the talent they have, England should have what it takes to go one step further. For many, Southgate is not the man to help England take that step.

But is Eddie Howe the manager who can? His reputation is certainly greater than ever thanks to his work at St James’ Park, and the chance to take charge of your country could be extremely hard to turn down.

That is why there will be a sense of fear behind the scenes at Newcastle United. Howe has just got his players back for pre-season, but there has to be a worry that he could suddenly be poached for another job.

Whether or not he would take it remains to be seen, but it is certainly a major concern for Newcastle fans now that Southgate’s future is more up in the air than ever before.
