Manchester United are very keen on poaching Dan Ashworth from Newcastle United but there is still a lot of work to be done.
Newcastle are obviously unwilling to part ways with their sporting director who joined just two years ago, but if they are forced to they won’t go down without a fight.
A report from Mail Online is now claiming that Ashworth himself is actually keen on the move and that a decision will be made between the two clubs by next week.
Newcastle will make it as difficult as possible for Man United
When Ashworth joined the Magpies it was supposed to be the beginning of a new era and that he would come in for the next five to 10 years to lay the groundwork for a very successful club in the long-term.
While he has made some significant changes like the upgrades to the training ground and building a new team of recruits, it’s just not a job that can be done effectively in two years.
As it’s now looking likely that we will leave Tyneside, Newcastle still have the chance to make things difficult for Man United as they can demand a fee of over £6m for his services and could place him on gardening leave for the next 12 months.
This would mean the 52-year-old would be unable to work at Old Trafford until 2025 at the earliest, so Newcastle do still hold a lot of power even if Ashworth himself is wanting to leave.

Newcastle can find a quick replacement for Ashworth
At this level of football it simply can’t be that difficult to find somebody to replace Ashworth who can do a similar job in helping to build the infrastructure of the club.
Newcastle are the richest club in the world and will have their pick of directors just like before Ashworth came in when they had a long list of candidates willing to throw their hat into the ring.
There have already been rumours linking Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes to the role and there are sure to be others who are wanting to replace Ashworth.
Newcastle will want this problem solved as quickly as possible, even if it does mean losing the director, so that they can begin their summer transfer plans with either Ashworth or somebody with a different vision.
