Newcastle United will have to quickly come up with a plan to replace Dan Ashworth should he choose to leave to join Manchester United.
The Red Devils have been tracking the director for a good few weeks now as their new owners have made it their number one priority to bring him into the club.
Should he leave, a new report from the i has claimed that the last time Newcastle were in this position they had a whole host of directors offering their names up for the job, and that could happen again.
Newcastle will have their pick of the bunch of directors
Of course, this is all still speculation and there hasn’t actually been any formal bids submitted for Ashworth just yet, but Newcastle are aware of the interest and will want to be prepared.
It is understood that should he choose to leave then he wouldn’t actually be able to work for Man United in 2025 as the club would place him on an extended period of gardening leave.
This should give Newcastle plenty of time to find a replacement for the 52-year-old who has only been at the club for two years after joining from Brighton to lead the club into a new era.
As stated in the report, there was even one possible candidate who has an impressive background in Champions League football and would be a suitable replacement for Ashworth at Newcastle.

Newcastle shouldn’t worry about life after Ashworth too much
Yes, Ashworth is clearly one of the best at his job and it is why Newcastle identified him as the man to lead the development of the club in the first place, but he’s not the only director to succeed in football.
There are going to be other options out there and potentially ones who could fit this role to an even higher standard than Ashworth is, him leaving doesn’t mean it is the end of all of this progress.
Newcastle can continue to improve their scouting team and attracting the best young talent from around the world, they just may have to do it under the guidance of a new director with different ideas and visions.
Up until this point the ownership have gotten pretty much everything spot on, and there’s no reason why they won’t be able to navigate past this little bump in the road.
