‘Frustrating’… Callum Wilson really wishes 24-year-old Newcastle player was fit right now

Callum Wilson might be back to full fitness, but Newcastle United still have a worryingly long injury list.

Eddie Howe got a couple of players back at the weekend. Wilson made his return after a groin problem, while we saw Harvey Barnes make his first Toon appearance since September. It was particularly great to see him back, and he scored on his return.

However, their returns coincided with an injury to Anthony Gordon, who left St James’ Park on crutches. On top of that, midfielders Joelinton, Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson remain on the sidelines.

But the one injury that Callum Wilson believes is the most frustrating is Alexander Isak‘s. The 24-year-old looks set to miss Newcastle’s next two games, having picked up a groin problem in the win over Aston Villa.

Callum Wilson wishes Alexander Isak was not injured

Following Newcastle’s draw with Luton, Wilson spoke to the Northern Echo. He explained why Isak’s current injury is so frustrating.

“I was out for a while, and worked hard in rehab to a good level, but the way it’s worked out is that Alex is injured again,” he said.

“I’m coming back, and we haven’t crossed paths all season which is frustrating because it’s nice to have that competition to push each other, and also that rotation.

“We’ve been yo-yoing all season in different positions. It’s frustrating for us and everyone, no more so than the manager. You want a fit squad, and we have a really good team and options, but not this season.”

Newcastle strikers unable to dovetail

When Wilson and Isak are fit, they score goals. Wilson has got eight in 21 appearances this season. As for Isak, he has got 14 goals in 25 appearances.

They were both lethal last season as well, spurring each other on to do better. They pushed each other, with Eddie Howe rotating them perfectly.

However, he has not had the opportunity to do that this season. Newcastle have played 34 games in total this season, but there have only been 14 occasions when Isak and Wilson have been fit together.

Our two strikers have not been able to rotate. They have barely been fit at the same time, unable to get the best out of each other.

It feel like when one returns, the other breaks down. It is so frustrating, as Wilson says.

Hopefully when Isak returns from this layoff, the duo can stay fit together and dovetail like they did last season. Their efforts played a huge role in us qualifying for the Champions League, and now we need them more than ever.
