Newcastle United have promoted former Sunderland manager Jack Ross to a top job at the club. The 49-year-old has reacted to the news.
While the focus has mainly been on the pitch this summer, the Magpies are putting in a lot of work behind the scenes to continue their growth.
It is fair to say that the last couple of months have been tough for Newcastle United off the pitch, despite all their success on it. Darren Eales is set to leave Newcastle after being diagnosed with blood cancer, and it was announced that Paul Mitchell has left Newcastle after less than a year on Tyneside and no new major signings.
There has been an air of frustration around PIF’s slow decision-making at Newcastle, with the new stadium project announcement a prime example. However, moves are still being made to help carry the club forward.
On Monday, Newcastle announced that Jack Ross has been promoted to head of football strategy after joining as the academy’s head of coaching development. With the former Sunderland boss landing an important new role on Tyneside, he has reacted to what it means for him and the future of the club.

Jack Ross ‘delighted’ at Newcastle United promotion
Before his time at Newcastle, Ross spent most of his managerial career in Scotland, with a detour to bitter rivals Sunderland along the way.
Ross now looks to have found a home on Tyneside and is set to be more involved in growing the club and building relationships in the UK and abroad. A piece on Newcastle’s website stated Ross’ new role will consist of him ‘overseeing the club’s player loan and emerging talent strategy and building strategic relationships with other clubs, introducing new football development and talent pathway opportunities in the UK and overseas.’
Speaking on his promotion, Ross said: “I am delighted to move to the role of Head of Football Strategy.
“This is an exciting opportunity to help the club build on the outstanding progress and successes it has achieved on and off the pitch in recent seasons.
“We have incredibly high-calibre staff here across multiple pillars of the club, and I am looking forward to supporting them in this new position.”
Newcastle United drop sporting director hint amid Jack Ross’ promotion
Ross worked closely with Mitchell before his Newcastle departure. The 49-year-old was once tasked with finding loan moves for Newcastle’s new academy stars like Antonio Cordero and Kyle Fitzgerald.
His new role looks like he will be doing similar, finding new clubs to send young players out to. He will likely share the responsibility with Shola Ameobi, Newcastle’s loan manager.

Newcastle are now looking for a new sporting director following Mitchell’s exit, and have shortened their list of candidates to two people. Nottingham Forest’s Ross Wilson and ex-Arsenal chief Jason Ayto are Newcastle’s leading candidates, but no final decision has been made.
In the article on Ross’ new role, it states that he will be reporting to a new sporting director, confirming the search is still on, but plans are being put in place for the new arrival.
