Newcastle tried to sign Benjamin Sesko during the summer, and the striker has shown the Magpies what they could have won with an amazing goal.

The young Slovenian was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park during the summer transfer window. Eddie Howe wanted a forward, and appeared to turn to Sesko in late July and early August.

Newcastle were reportedly willing to pay £25million for the 19-year-old. However, RB Salzburg planned to keep him until 2023.

That will happen, but he has already decided his next destination. Just as Newcastle were stepping up their interest, RB Leipzig swooped in.

Sesko has agreed a move to RB Leipzig, and will join the Bundesliga side next summer. He has agreed a five-year contract, and will cost the Red Bull side £21.5million.

Given how highly rated Sesko is, it was a blow to see him secure a move to Leipzig over Newcastle. And the striker has just shown the Magpies exactly what they could have had.

Benjamin Sesko scores stunning goal vs Sweden

Despite only being 19, Sesko has already made multiple appearances for Slovenia. He won his latest cap on Tuesday night, with his side facing Sweden in the Nations League.

For Newcastle fans, this game should have been about watching Alexander Isak in action for his country. Instead, it was all about Sesko’s moment of brilliance.

He scored the opening goal of the game, giving Slovenia the lead in the 28th minute. And he did it in emphatic fashion.

Petar Stojanovic clipped a ball into the area and in behind the Sweden defence, into the path of Sesko. He found himself wide in the box, and rather than taking a touch to compose himself, he struck a first time volley.

It thundered past Sweden stopper Robin Olsen and into the far corner. Sesko’s goal was amazing, and was very reminiscent of Premier League legend Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman’s trademark strike was a volley, and Sesko appears to have that attribute in his locker too. It has also been compared to Marco van Basten’s world class goal in 1988, which is incredibly high praise.

The soon-to-be RB Leipzig striker is a huge talent, and could go on to become one of the top forwards in Europe. Sadly that won’t be happening in a Newcastle shirt, much to the disappointment of the Toon Army.
