Former Newcastle player shares what he noticed about Lewis Miley after playing against him

Newcastle United teenager Lewis Miley is starting to receive more first-team minutes, which is what he deserves after shining in pre-season.

The 17-year-old was one of Newcastle‘s breakout stars in the summer. Despite all the money that has been spent over the past couple of years, it was two academy lads in Elliot Anderson and Miley who were hogging the headlines.

It was exciting to see two local lads play so well, especially Miley. Despite being so young, he held his own against elite players when we faced Chelsea in America. He was unfazed, and that has continued into competitive action.

Miley has made three appearances this season in three different competitions. He got his first ever start when Newcastle beat Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, then he made his Champions League debut off the bench in the away defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Now he is a Premier League starter too, doing well against Bournemouth after being named in the starting XI.

The midfielder still has a lot of improving to do, but he already looks comfortable at senior level. And that was something that former Newcastle striker Adam Campbell noticed about him during the summer.

Adam Campbell was impressed by Lewis Miley in pre-season

Campbell, who made five senior appearances for Newcastle, was playing for Gateshead up until August when he joined League Two side Crawley Town.

He featured in the pre-season clash between Newcastle and Gateshead in July, where the Magpies won 3-2 thanks to a late winner from Jay Turner-Cooke. That goal was expertly set up by Lewis Miley, who was captaining the side at that stage.

In an interview with Newcastle World, Campbell admitted that he was seriously impressed with what he saw from Miley on that day.

“When we played against Newcastle in pre-season, he was really confident, he’s a good size and it’s the natural progression for him to play more first-team football,” he said.

“It’s good to see a local lad doing it and that’s maybe just the North East lad in me.”

More minutes on the horizon for Newcastle teenager

Miley’s form in pre-season has afforded him more opportunities at senior level, and that should become a regular occurrence over the coming weeks.

Given Newcastle’s injury woes, it is likely that Miley will be called upon more and more by Eddie Howe. He may even start against Chelsea on Saturday.

That would be a momentous moment for Miley – his first ever Premier League start at St James’ Park.

After that, the Magpies are off to Paris to face PSG in the Champions League – another game where Miley could feature.
