Eddie Howe got his side off to a winning start in pre-season with a 2-3 victory over Gateshead with Newcastle United’s match-day squad barely recognisable.

A lot of the Newcastle big guns were left watching from the rather moist sidelines as a handful of first-team players battled Gateshead alongside many youth players who were hoping to play their way into Eddie Howe‘s thinking ahead of the new season.

One player who is already at the forefront of Howe’s mind was 17-year-old Lewis Miley who made his senior bow against Chelsea in the final game of last season.

Lewis and Jamie Miley got to share the pitch for the final few minutes

Lewis Miley got to share the pitch with his big brother, Jamie against Gateshead after Lewis Miley was brought on at 65 minutes and Jamie replaced Dan Burn on 84 minutes.

As good as a moment as it may have been to represent the first-team alongside his big brother, it likely got even better when 19-year-old Jamie trotted over to Lewis with the captain’s armband after receiving it from the departing Burn.

Even if it was just for six or so minutes, wearing the Newcastle United captain’s armband for the first-team at the age of 17 must have felt absolutely amazing for the youngster.

Before receiving the armband, ‘exciting‘ midfielder Miley put his stamp on the game with a sublime assist for fellow academy player Jay Turner-Cooke to grab the winner.

Miley’s Newcastle future looks extremely bright

Fans on Twitter remarked how brilliant Miley looks and how bright his future can be and all signs are pointing to a fantastic career. The Chronicle even gave him a rating of 8/10, the same score given to Allan Saint-Maximin.

Miley’s future in the game looks limitless and to think he’s one of our own is amazing. He made it through to the first-team at the age of 17 and he did it before Dan Ashworth finished fixing the academy. Hopefully we can expect more like Lewis Miley to make that leap in the future.

For now, it looks like Miley will be staying on Tyneside rather than going out on loan next season and I’m expecting to see his name on Eddie Howe’s team sheets throughout the season. I’m not expecting it to be there every week, but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of him in the near future.
