It was Newcastle’s second defeat of the season and it extended the winless run in the Premier League to four matches with difficult clashes against Chelsea and Arsenal now on the horizon.
The biggest problem facing Eddie Howe is Newcastle’s lack of goals this season with the Magpies scoring only eight goals in their opening eight matches.
To make matters worse, two former Newcastle players put on an attacking masterclass elsewhere in the Premier League.

Newcastle United will regret Elliot Anderson sale
Selling Elliot Anderson was extremely tough for Howe and the 21-year-old is quickly showing why his £35m exit will be a huge regret for years to come.
He has gone from strength to strength since leaving for Nottingham Forest this summer and Anderson has also been “excellent” for England.
Elliot Anderson continued his great form for Forest in their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Monday evening, where he impressed in an attacking midfield role.
Newcastle fans reacted to Anderson’s display and agreed that his sale will be a big regret.
Newcastle have lacked creativity and flair and Anderson showed that in abundance for Forest on Monday evening. He ran the show alongside former Newcastle teammate Chris Wood.
Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood star in Team of the Week
Anderson was the standout player for Forest against Palace, but right behind him was Wood, who scored the winning goal for the hosts.
Wood joined Newcastle for £25m in 2022 following the PIF takeover and scored five goals in 39 games before leaving to join Forest permanently in 2023.
He has already matched his five-goal tally from his time at Newcastle in eight Premier League matches this season, with the latest coming against Palace.
WhoScored revealed their Premier League Team of the Week on Tuesday afternoon based on the highest-rated players from across Matchweek eight, and both Anderson and Wood starred in the lineup.
Wood earned a 7.59 rating for his match-winning performance against Palace while Anderson got an 8.65 – the highest of any player in the Premier League this week.
