Bruno Guimaraes watched from the bench as Newcastle United were torn apart by Tottenham on Sunday.
By the time he was brought on, the Magpies were already 3-1 down. The Brazil international couldn’t turn the tide, with the Magpies heading back north after a 5-1 thrashing.
It was no surprise to see him start as a substitute against Spurs. Bruno had a busy international break, meaning he’d barely trained with his Toon teammates. When the starting XI was announced, it wasn’t a shock to see Bruno on the bench.
However, he proved in his cameo that he simply has to start on Friday night.

Bruno Guimaraes to start for the first time at St James’ Park
Eddie Howe went with Jonjo Shelvey, Joelinton and Joe Willock in midfield against Spurs, but sadly they failed to deliver. The latter was particularly poor.
When Bruno came on he immediately showed his class. He wanted to get on the ball and begin attacks. He was constantly trying to play the ball forwards. Sometimes the only thing that stopped him was a lack of movement from his teammates.

Even in defeat, Bruno showed what a quality player he is for Newcastle. He’s miles ahead of every other midfielder in Howe’s squad.
The 24-year-old has to start on Friday against Wolves. After three straight defeats, it’s vital Newcastle put in a performance in front of a raucous St James’ Park crowd.
Bruno is yet to start a game at home for Newcastle, but that must change on Friday. The big decision for Howe will be who he replaces.

Willock feels the most likely to be dropped, meaning Bruno could take his place on the right of the midfield three.
Howe has taken his time with Bruno, and rightly so. But every time he’s played, he’s proven what a talent he is.
The St James’ Park crowd need to see that talent up close and personal on Friday night. He has to start against Wolves.
