Fabian Schar rescued a point for Newcastle United in their dramatic 3-3 draw with Liverpool.

Newcastle United put on what was perhaps their best performance of the season on Wednesday evening with Eddie Howe’s side going toe-to-toe with the Premier League leaders.

Alexander Isak fired Newcastle into the lead with a thumping effort from outside the box and Anthony Gordon restored that lead in the second half and silenced his critics with his celebration.

It looked as though Liverpool would steal the three points after a second-half brace from Mohamed Salah, but Newcastle deservedly drew level in the 90th minute when Fabian Schar latched onto a deep free-kick.

Frankly, Newcastle will be disappointed to have not beaten Liverpool after dominating large parts of the game.

What Fabian Schar said after 3-3 draw with Liverpool

Despite scoring a last-gasp equaliser at St James’ Park, Schar was disappointed after the Liverpool draw.

He was frustrated at the way Newcastle conceded to Liverpool which is only natural for a defender who has been so reliable for the Magpies this season.

Schar also admitted he didn’t intend to score when he connected with the late free-kick as he was simply trying to keep the ball in play.

After the full-time whistle, Schar took to social media to send a seven-word message to supporters.

Via X, formerly known as Twitter, Schar posted: “Never say die attitude at our house” accompanied by a photo of his celebration and the pre-match Wor Flags display.

Eddie Howe’s biggest task after Liverpool draw

There was not much belief among Newcastle fans that they would pick up a result against Liverpool on Wednesday, especially after the toothless display against Crystal Palace on the weekend.

But it has been a recurring theme this season that Newcastle play their best football against the bigger sides.

The challenge for Howe now is to replicate that kind of performance on a regular basis, starting with this Saturday’s visit to Brentford.

Newcastle need to find a way of matching the energy and intensity they showed on Wednesday each and every week.
