Fabian Schar has made an ‘honest’ admission about his excellent equaliser in Newcastle United’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Liverpool on Wednesday night.
Newcastle United put in a vastly improved performance from their recent results against runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool and took a first-half lead through Alexander Isak’s sublime strike.
The Reds came roaring back after the break and levelled shortly afterwards through Curtis Jones but Newcastle didn’t let their heads drop and retook the lead when Anthony Gordon found the bottom corner.
Yet, the electrifying Mohamed Salah hit a delightful double to put Liverpool ahead for the first time and seemingly on the way to three points.
Just when it appeared the Magpies were down and out, Fabian Schar arrived at the back post to find a more than-deserved last-minute leveller.
Yet, the centre-back has admitted he did not mean his brilliant finish.

Fabian Schar admits he didn’t mean to score his goal vs Liverpool
Liverpool had capitalised on defensive mistakes by Newcastle three times so it seemed only fair that the Toon got a slice of luck as well.
That happened in the final minute when Caoimhin Kelleher came out to catch a corner but misjudged the ball, allowing Schar to find an empty net.
However, the finish was much tougher than that as the Swiss defender had to catch the falling ball on the slide and direct it goal wards. Something, he admits, he didn’t actually mean to do.
When speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, Schar said: “Well to be honest, I was on a stretch so I thought I’d try to keep it in play and bring it into the dangerous area.”
“You weren’t shooting?,” Schar was asked. “I tried but,” he replied. “I can’t really say. But obviously great goal, a great finish.”
A brilliant performance from Fabian Schar
Isak will rightly earn the headlines for his all-action performance leading the line but Schar deserves a lot of praise for the result and not just due to the goal.
He was imperious throughout the game alongside Dan Burn, keeping 2/3s of Liverpool’s attack quiet and keeping Darwin Nunez especially on a short leash.
Schar’s perfectly-timed tackle on Luis Diaz in particular got the crowd roaring and he helped inspire the performance.
