Newcastle United fans were rocked with more bad injury news on Friday, as Eddie Howe provided an update on Fabian Schar.
The 32-year-old suffered a hamstring injury during the win over Sheffield United last weekend, and his subsequent absence from training hinted at a spell on the sidelines.
Eddie Howe has confirmed that will be the case, stating that Fabian Schar will not be involved in the Newcastle United squad that faces Burnley on Saturday. In fact, he even suggested that the centre-back might not play again this season.

What Eddie Howe said about Fabian Schar
Howe addressed the media on Friday morning, and stated that Schar could be the third Newcastle United centre-back who is out for the rest of the season, after Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.
“Fabian will miss a period of time with a minor hamstring problem,” he said.
“He won’t be available tomorrow and I doubt we’ll see him again this season.”
Fabian Schar has now given his verdict on Newcastle United injury
That was a major blow ahead of a crucial end to the season. Newcastle have four Premier League games remaining, and are aiming to finish in the top six and qualify for Europe. That will be more difficult without Schar, who has been an ever-present in the Toon starting XI this season.
His run of consecutive Premier League starts will come to an end on Saturday against Burnley, but his season might not be over after all.
That is according to Schar himself, who has told Blick that he does not think his season is over.
“In my opinion it’s not that bad and I’m fully expecting to play for Newcastle this season,” he said.
“Accordingly, I have no worries at all when it comes to the European Championships.”
More injury uncertainty at Newcastle United
While Howe is unsure, Schar appears to be pretty adamant that he will get over this hamstring problem soon and play for Newcastle United again this season.
He fully expects to be involved again between now and May 19th, which is the date of the Magpies’ final Premier League game of the season.
Schar is even more confident that he will be fit in time for the Euros, with Switzerland competing in Group A alongside Germany, Scotland and Hungary.
It is suddenly a very strange situation regarding Schar, and it pretty much sums up Newcastle United’s season regarding injuries. There have been a lot of mixed messages, normally for the worse. It was only recently that Kieran Trippier was expected to be absent for two games, but the clash with Burnley will be the ninth consecutive match that he has missed.
This time it is the opposite situation, with Schar possibly returning earlier than expected. It would be great if that is the case, as Schar has enjoyed a brilliant season so far and we were already struggling for options at the back even before this injury.
