The defeat to Manchester City was a tough one to take, but there was at least one positive for Fabian Schar.

He was unable stop Pep Guardiola’s side grabbing a stoppage time winner, with Schar not close enough to make a challenge on Oscar Bobb as he incredibly danced around Martin Dubravka following a beautiful pass from Kevin De Bruyne.

Schar and co were dejected after the game, getting nothing from it despite leaving everything on the pitch. The Swiss centre-back played particularly well, signing off his new contract in style.

It was confirmed last week that the 32-year-old had extended his stay at St James’ Park. He is now contracted with Newcastle until 2025, much to the delight of the Toon Army.

Newcastle fans are buzzing that Schar is staying on Tyneside, and Wor Flags paid tribute to him on Saturday evening.

Ahead of Newcastle’s game against Manchester City, there was the usual pre-match flag display. Black and white flags were waved across the ground, while a new display was unveiled.

At the same time, there was a change to the usual pre-match playlist. Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles began to blare out, as Wor Flags paid tribute to Fabian Schar.

A flag with him celebrating was accompanied by a banner that read ‘everyone needs a Fabian Schar’.

That is certainly true, and the man himself has now spoke out about the display and what it meant to him.

Fabian Schar loved what Newcastle fans did for him

Following Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat to Man City, Schar took to his Instagram story to thank Wor Flags for what they did for him before the game.

Alongside a picture of the display, he wrote: “Absolutely gutted about the result yesterday. But this means everything to me. Love you all.”

It is a touching response from Schar, who has been transformed by Eddie Howe since he became manager.

He has been exceptional since the change of management, having fell out of favour under Steve Bruce. But he is now playing the best football of his career, and continues to look more and more of a bargain at £3million.

Wor Flags got it spot on. Everyone really does need a Fabian Schar. Luckily, we have got the only one.
