Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has been full of praise for Newcastle United star Nick Woltemade.

Brighton play Newcastle United on Saturday as the Premier League returns and Woltemade will be hoping to continue his fine form of late.

Indeed, Newcastle’s club-record signing has scored four goals in his opening six games for the club. Woltemade is breaking goalscoring records at Newcastle and also opened his account for the German national team over the course of the international break.

It’s unwise to expect a player still adapting to life in the Premier League to score in every game. Still, few would doubt that the 23-year-old has started better than many would have predicted, particularly after such a draining summer on the transfer front involving strikers on Tyneside.

Ahead of Newcastle’s trip to the Amex Stadium, compatriot Hurzeler has been effusive in his praise.

Fabian Hurzeler impressed by Newcastle United star Nick Woltemade

The Seagulls boss was speaking to Stadium Astro ahead of the game on Saturday.

As a prominent German coach, it’s only natural that he’d be asked about Woltemade. The Newcastle forward has attracted criticism from leading figures in German game, due to the money the club paid to sign him at a relatively early stage of his career.

However, Hurzeler gave a glowing appraisal of the former Stuttgart forward.

“First of all I’m very happy for him. I think it’s not easy to come to the Premier League and adapt that quickly,” he said.

“He’s a special profile. He’s a tall player but also technical. He’s very good. A good execution of small actions in small spaces and he’s a great goalscorer. Overall, he’s a full package of a player, he has a lot of strengths and a lot of self confidence at the moment so it will be a challenge to defend him.”

German media are changing their tune on Nick Woltemade now

Woltemade scored for Germany against Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualification win in Belfast earlier this week.

It was his first goal for his country and an important one at that. The Germans took another step closer towards securing a place at next summer’s showpiece tournament with that victory.

After the game, the German media hailed Woltemade as Germany’s “saviour”.

Having had to deal with digs from various Bayern Munich legends following his move to Newcastle, that was quite the way to respond.
