Everton fans have reacted to the news that they are linked with a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff this summer.

It is a rumour that has been circulating since the January transfer window, but one that is now picking up speed.

Newcastle United do not need to sell players due to PSR this summer, but they are still looking to offload those who have become fringe players in the last 12 months under Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. Sean Longstaff is one of those players, having lost his place in the starting XI after Sandro Tonali returned from his suspension in August.

Reports on Tuesday stated that Newcastle now see Longstaff as ‘available’, and Everton have a long-standing interest in him. With one year left on his current deal, Longstaff will be available for around £10m this summer, a fee which will grant them pure profit.

Longstaff leaving Newcastle would undoubtedly be the end of an era on Tyneside. The 27-year-old made his debut under Rafa Benitez in 2018 but could now be saying goodbye to the club he has been a part of since 2006.

With the news out that they are interested, Everton fans have taken to social media to share their views on the move.

Everton fans do not want their club to sign Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff

Everton are not the only club reportedly interested in Longstaff. Newly promoted side Leeds United have also registered an interest in the midfielder and believe they can sign him.

Newcastle would be losing a club-trained player if Longstaff leaves, putting them in jeopardy of losing squad places in the Champions League next season, but that appears to be a problem that Howe is happy to live with.

After learning that Longstaff is linked, Everton fans shared how they really feel about the move on the social media platform X.

“For about £5 mill as a squad player yeah anything above 5m no thanks.” said one Everton fan, while another added: “Wouldn’t want him for free.”

This Everton fan was adamant they did not want Longstaff, saying: “No thanks, rather be a player short.”

“He never, ever wants to leave Newcastle. He would rather be water boy there than move anywhere else.” said this honest Everton fan.

Another fan added: “If Gana goes, then we may need to take a look. He is 27 and the payment on the PSR for 25/26 would not be that high. Though I would only pay £12 million max.”

Finally, this Everton fan simply said: “No thanks.”

Sean Longstaff’s Newcastle United statistics as Everton retain interest

If this summer is the end for Longstaff, then many fans will agree that he has had a good innings on Tyneside. Coming through the academy, the midfielder has played in some of Newcastle’s most important games, including their historic 4-1 win against PSG in the Champions League and the 2023 Carabao Cup final.

Longstaff would leave Newcastle as a cup-winner, knowing that he did everything he could to help them on their way to the final. The 27-year-old scored the winning penalty in a second-round shootout against Nottingham Forest, kicking off their historic run to the trophy.

There is no doubt Everton would be getting a committed player in Longstaff if he joins, someone who gave their all for the black and white stripes throughout their career.

Many Newcastle fans will be sad to see Longstaff go, but will ultimately realise that it is probably for the best.
