Newcastle United are still waiting to discover whether or not the FA will make a formal approach for Eddie Howe to become the England manager.

Eddie Howe is currently preparing his Newcastle United team for the new Premier League season, with the Magpies set to face Southampton in their opening game in less than two weeks.

In the background, there is the lingering threat of the FA. They are looking for a new England manager following Gareth Southgate’s departure, and Howe is very much on their radar.

Howe is one of England’s top targets, which is no surprise given the work he has done on Tyneside as Newcastle United manager. He is one of the favourites for the role, with pundits such as Jamie Carragher eager for Howe to take the England job.

But it remains to be seen who will be the next permanent Three Lions boss, as England prepare for their first set of fixtures without Southgate next month.

Who is ‘likely’ to manage England in the Nations League in September

England are set to compete in the Nations League in September, as they take on Republic of Ireland and Finland. Heading into those fixtures, England do not have a manager.

While there have been fears on Tyneside that Howe will be on the touchline, that is not what is considered ‘likely’ to happen at this moment in time.

According to the Telegraph, Lee Carsley is likely to be the interim manager for England’s upcoming Nations League games.

They state that the Under-21s boss is in the frame to replace Southgate permanently, and appears to be on course to take temporary charge as the FA continue their search for the next England manager.

Newcastle will hope that Carsley thrives

If Carsley does take charge of England on a temporary basis, it could end up being to Newcastle’s advantage.

The hope will be that he thrives, so much so that the FA decide to give him the job permanently. That would result in Eddie Howe remaining at St James’ Park, which is what everyone associated with Newcastle United wants.

Appointing Carsley could benefit Anthony Gordon, as he worked with the former Everton midfielder for the Under-21s. It could increase Gordon’s minutes at international level, having only made one appearance at Euro 2024.

It was a huge shock to see the 23-year-old barely feature at the Euros, and that will hopefully spur Gordon on to become even better at Newcastle – where he will hopefully continue to work alongside Eddie Howe.
