Eddie Howe’s actual reaction to Paul Mitchell leaving Newcastle United speaks volumes

The drama continues at Newcastle United.  

Not long after sealing a return to the Champions League stage, Newcastle United confirmed an imminent big-name exit. 

Indeed, Paul Mitchell will be departing in June. Newcastle have confirmed Mitchell will leave as sporting director, despite only being appointed at the club back in 2024.  

It’ll be interesting to see where this leaves Eddie Howe. Upon his initial arrival, Howe and Mitchell clashed at Newcastle but the situation appeared to have cooled.  

Owners PIF are set to back Howe in the transfer market this summer, but it seems the Newcastle United manager is concerned.

Eddie Howe concerned at how Paul Mitchell exit impacts Newcastle now  

According to The Athletic, Howe wasn’t particularly celebrating the news of Mitchell’s imminent departure. 

Rather, Howe is said to have immediately been concerned about the knock-on impact his exit could have on transfers.

Mitchell’s role at Newcastle is understood to have been largely focused on recruitment, so the fact he’s leaving is said to have concerned Howe with the transfer window set to open very soon.

Mitchell is still working until the end of June, so there is yet time to finally land a big-name signing.

Howe wants Newcastle to act quickly this summer and the club look to be in a strong position to do so. 

Newcastle are in a strong PSR position this summer. During the last two transfer windows, they’ve sold Elliot Anderson, Yankuba Minteh, Lloyd Kelly and Miguel Almiron.  

While it remains to be seen if it’s possible, Mitchell wants to sign a player before leaving Newcastle.  

Hopefully, that happens. It hasn’t been easy for the sporting director and it’s hard to know whether or not he’s done anything worthy of all the turbulence his appointment seemed to cause yet.
