Eddie Howe speaks out about Bruno Guimaraes injury concern

Bruno Guimaraes has not been at his best as of late, but Eddie Howe is adamant that it is not because of an ankle injury.

The Newcastle midfielder picked up a nasty looking ankle injury at the start of the year, reducing him to tears as he was forced off against Fulham.

It came at a time when the Magpies were pushing to reach the Carabao Cup final, and it looked like Bruno was in trouble.

Miraculously, he was fit the next week and has played almost every minute of every game bar a three-match period when he was suspended.

But there have been times when the ankle injury has flared up again. It happened at Wembley against Manchester United, while he needed painkillers before the recent win over Brentford.

It appears to be an underlying problem for the 25-year-old, but Toon boss Howe has stated that he is happy with Bruno’s ‘physical output’.

Eddie Howe suggests Bruno Guimaraes is over his ‘ankle problems’

Ahead of the game against Brighton, Howe spoke to the Chronicle about Bruno’s fitness.

“Bruno physically has been really good,” he said.

“He’s had a couple of ankle problems but he seems to have got back to his very best in terms of his physical output.”

We will see how fit he is tonight against Brighton

Howe appears to be really happy with Bruno’s fitness, and has suggested that his ankle problems are a thing of the past.

Obviously the manager knows his players better than anyone, and will likely have the data to back up his claim about Bruno being ‘back to his best’ physically. We will see whether or not that is the case tonight against an energetic Brighton side.

Newcastle need a big performance from Bruno tonight, especially with Sean Longstaff still out of action. The Toon midfield has looked disjointed without the local lad, and it will need to be at its best against a side that moves the ball so efficiently.

While Howe has stated that Bruno is not suffering from an ankle injury, it would not be a surprise to see him undergo some kind of treatment once the season is over. It appears to be a reoccurring issue, but one that can be patched up on a week to week basis.

Hopefully it does not flare up again tonight, on what could be a special evening inside St James’ Park.
