Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes looked distraught as he was unable to continue playing after suffering an injury against Fulham, according to journalist Ciaran Kelly.

After 20 minutes played, the Brazilian was down on the pitch, with physios looking over his ankle as he grimaced in pain.

Back on his feet, the 25-year-old seemed to shake it off. However, just 15 minutes later, he was back down receiving treatment. Strapping up the ankle, he continued to battle on.

Despite his efforts, Guimaraes came off shortly before half-time. He was later replaced by Allan Saint-Maximin for the second half.

Taking to Twitter, Kelly claimed the midfielder was in tears as he exited the field.

Guimaraes suffers injury blow

Until the medical assessment comes in over the next few days, fans will be unsure as to the extent of Guimaraes’ injury.

Eddie Howe will be hoping it doesn’t turn out as serious as possibly feared, as the midfielder has been absolutely instrumental to the side’s success this season.

Thus far, the Brazilian has made 20 appearances for the Toon this term. This includes 15 matches in the Premier League, during which he has bagged three goals and three assists.

As per WhoScored rankings, Guimaraes has been the Magpies’ second-best player this season – only behind right-back Kieran Trippier, who has been outstanding.

Dominating possession in the middle of the park, the 25-year-old is arguably Howe’s most important player.

If he is out of action for a considerable amount of time, this will be a major blow for Newcastle – who are still fighting for a place in the top-four.

Fingers crossed it is just a minor knock.
