Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is ‘touch and go’ for this weekend’s game against Manchester City due to injury.

That is according to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who believes that Bruno has picked up a similar injury to the one he suffered against Fulham back in January.

The Brazilian twisted his ankle on that day, and was forced off after trying to play on. He was reduced to tears, which suggested he was set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

However, he was able to recover one week later and has only not played since then due to suspension.

Bruno returned at the weekend for the Carabao Cup final, and started in midfield against Manchester United. Despite a wonderful performance, he was unable to inspire the Magpies to trophy glory much to his disappointment.

Instead, he was forced off with injury once again. Bruno picked up another ankle problem, and limped off with around 10 minutes to go.

Now Newcastle are sweating on his fitness ahead of this Saturday’s game against Manchester City.

Bruno Guimaraes could miss Man City game due to injury

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh provided an update on Bruno and Joe Willock on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.

“Bruno’s a little bit touch and go,” Waugh said.

“It’s a similar injury to the one he had a few weeks ago [against Fulham] and obviously he played the following weekend. Whether they want to risk him as much now – I’m unsure.”

Waugh went on to add: “I think Joe Willock should be in contention to start. Then it’s whether Bruno Guimaraes is deemed fit enough or not.”

Newcastle need Bruno fit

The Magpies need a lift after the weekend’s Carabao Cup final disappointment, and now face the unenviable task of heading to the Etihad to take on Manchester City.

Howe’s side will need to be at their best to get anything out of the game with the champions, and that will be extremely difficult if Bruno is not fit enough to play.

The 25-year-old is the one man who makes us tick, and his absence was massively felt in the buildup to the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Hopefully he is fit enough to start on Saturday, but Eddie Howe must be careful not to risk further injury.

Waugh thinks Willock could return to the starting XI this weekend, and fingers crossed it’s alongside Bruno rather than instead of him.
