Eddie Howe shows his ruthless side as four Newcastle players are dropped

Eddie Howe’s first-team squad is undergoing a major shakeup as Newcastle begin pre-season.

Most players returned for training last week, and now the internationals are back too. That includes new signings Sven Botman and Nick Pope.

The Magpies have had a busy summer so far, with three new arrivals already confirmed. However, outgoings have proven to be much more difficult.

Isaac Hayden has joined Norwich on loan, while Freddie Woodman has gone to Preston permanently. But they are the only two first-team players to leave so far.

That’s despite the fact Howe has multiple players in his squad that he doesn’t need. And now the Toon boss has taken measures to keep his team as streamlined as possible.

Howe drops four Newcastle players

According to the Daily Mail, multiple senior Newcastle players are now training with the Under-23s. They name Jeff Hendrick, Ciaran Clark and Dwight Gayle.

The trio have been heavily linked with moves away from St James’ Park, and clearly have no future under Howe.

Another player training with the Under-23s is Matty Longstaff. The Chronicle report that he is also set to leave this summer.

It’s a ruthless move by Howe, and underlines his stance that they are no longer needed. They won’t get a chance to prove they have a future at Newcastle, and will train with the kids until they are sold or loaned out.

It’s harsh on the likes of Clark and Gayle, who have been good players for us since arriving in 2016. They were fantastic in the Championship, then remained with the club in the top flight.

Clark, in particular, has been a solid Premier League defender, although last season was a real struggle for him.

However, with the direction that Newcastle are going in, player turnover is necessary.

Howe is laying down the law, and only wants to work with players who can help the club in the 2022/23 campaign. Clark, Gayle, Hendrick and Matty Longstaff don’t appear to fall under that bracket.
