Eddie Howe is yet to have a fully fit Newcastle United squad this season.

Injuries plagued the Magpies last season, while some issues have lingered into the current campaign. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are still absent, while Lewis Miley is yet to return for Newcastle United.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United are currently without Alexander Isak. He is suffering from a broken toe, at a time when his fellow Toon striker is also absent.

Newcastle have two excellent strikers, but Eddie Howe has only ever been able to rely on one of them this season.

Callum Wilson out of action due to injury

Callum Wilson has not made a single appearance for Newcastle this season, having suffered a back injury at the start of the summer. The hope was that he would only miss the first few games of the 2024/25 campaign, but a subsequent hamstring problem has resulted in a prolonged absence for Newcastle’s number nine.

Fitness issues continue to plague Wilson, much to frustration of everyone associated with Newcastle United.

Wilson is expected to return against Brighton after the international break, but supporters will always be fearful that another injury is right around the corner.

Eddie Howe ‘determined’ ahead of Callum Wilson’s Newcastle United return

However, Eddie Howe is eager for that not to be the case, and has told the media that the club are ‘determined’ to ensure that Wilson stays fit for a sustained period of time once he returns in the very near future.

“Callum is definitely one of those people [who adds to the dressing room] – he’s always laughing, always,” he said.

“But not laughing in a negative way, laughing in a positive way. He produces energy. Whenever he’s in the room, you notice him, and you can’t have enough people like that to galvanise the group.

“But also he’s a serious guy who wants to win and he wants to achieve. I know he’s really serious about trying to help propel Newcastle to win trophies. That drives Callum.

“Of course, his playing ability when he’s fit, he’s an incredible player, so we’re determined to try and get him back fit and and keep him fit for as long as possible.”

Wilson will be desperate to remind Newcastle fans what he is capable of

Howe has sent a key reminder to Newcastle United fans. When Wilson is fit, he is an incredible player. His goal return in black and white is outstanding, with the forward boasting 47 Premier League goals for the Magpies.

Even last season when he had so many injury issues, Wilson still managed nine goals in 20 Premier League appearances.

Scoring goals is not and has never been the issue. When he is fit, he is one of the best goalscorers in the Premier League and a player that Newcastle United are lucky to have.

But the issue is that he has not been fit enough, and the concern will be that the injuries will only continue the older he gets.

But Howe is keen for that not to be the case, and the 32-year-old will feel exactly the same. He will be absolutely devastated to have missed so much football, and will have a real determination to get back amongst the goals as soon as he returns.

That could happen on October 19th, when Newcastle United face Brighton at St James’ Park.
