Fabian Schar was the standout performer for Newcastle United as they beat AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle got the job done and are through to the next round of the Carabao Cup after beating Wimbledon 1-0, but that’s about it for the positives from Tuesday night.
It was a flat and uninspiring performance from Eddie Howe‘s side, but Newcastle avoided a major cup upset and have now booked their spot in the fourth round where they will face Premier League rivals Chelsea.
In truth, Newcastle never looked in danger against the League Two opposition, but the lack of creativity and ideas will be a concern.
Fabian Schar was the star of the show. Newcastle’s captain for the night took the game by the scruff of the neck and fired the Magpies into the lead with a calmly-taken penalty.

Fabian Schar injury update
After his impressive display, Fabian Schar was taken off by Howe in the dying minutes of the game with the centre-back appearing to struggle with an injury.
It will be a huge concern for Newcastle and Howe given that Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman are injured and may not return from the treatment room until 2025.
Dan Burn replaced Schar and partnered Llloyd Kelly at the back for the final few minutes.
With Newcastle already looking ahead to Saturday’s trip to face Everton in the Premier League, Howe has given an update on Schar’s injury scare.

When asked about Schar’s late substitution, Howe said: “I think it was a couple of things.
“Hopefully he’s okay. It was a bang to his ankle and a bit of tightness in his body.”
Howe didn’t sound too concerned about Schar’s fitness, which will be music to the ears of Newcastle fans, who will quite frankly be sick of injuries by now.
Fabian Schar is a key player for Newcastle
Even before the injuries at the back, Schar has been a key player for Newcastle and he has stepped up when needed.
Injuries to Botman and Lascelles have left Newcastle extremely short at the back but Schar has been reliable and consistent this season.
Newcastle could bolster the backline with a centre-back signing in January and they could return for Marc Guehi after missing out over the summer.
If that is the case, Newcastle could do with Schar staying fit until the transfer window opens up again.
