Fabian Schar will deservedly steal the headlines after starring in Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon.
The 32-year-old proved to be the difference maker at St James’ Park on Tuesday evening after netting the only goal of the game.
Newcastle United dominated possession but struggled to break down a well-organised Wimbledon defence.
After a sleepy start to the match, Newcastle were awarded a penalty when Miguel Almiron was brought down in the box by Joe Pigott – a decision that left the Wimbledon boss “fuming”.
Fabian Schar, who was named captain for the night, stepped up to take the spot kick and dispatched it calmly.

Fabian Schar stars but Bruno Guimaraes deserves credit
There is no denying that Schar was superb on the night. Despite playing centre-back he was one of Newcastle’s most creative players with his line-splitting passes through midfield.
He will rightly get his flowers, but Bruno Guimaraes also deserves credit for his near-flawless substitute cameo.
After an uninspiring first-half performance, Eddie Howe looked to his bench and brought on Guimaraes for Harvey Barnes at the break.
The Brazilian immediately injected some intensity and energy into the midfield and got Newcastle ticking.
In his 45-minute cameo, he took 66 touches of the ball and completed 52 out of his 59 passes. That is more than Joe Willock made and only nine less than Sean Longstaff despite that duo playing the entire match.
His link-up play around the box was sharp and he almost ended the night with an assist after combining well with Joe Willock.
Bruno Guimaraes can return to his best this season
Guimaraes has had a poor start to the season, but impressive performances against City and now Wimbledon should help him return to his best.
Howe pointed to the busy summer as the reason behind Guimaraes’ poor form, so it only makes sense that he will grow into the season.
Giving him a small rest and only playing him for 45 minutes against Wimbledon was a smart decision by Howe. It has helped to grow his match rhythm without putting too much stress on his fitness levels.
