Newcastle United desperately need Callum Wilson back from injury.

The 32-year-old has once again struggled with injuries this season, with Callum Wilson only fit enough to make four substitute appearances for Newcastle United.

His next comeback is not far away, however. It was recently reported that Wilson is eyeing the Arsenal game for his return, with the Magpies facing the Gunners at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

While the Fulham game was too soon, Eddie Howe said Wilson was back in training last week. That increased the possibility of him being available for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

Now the Newcastle United manager has spoken about Wilson again, having addressed the media ahead of Wednesday night’s game against Arsenal.

Eddie Howe has admitted that Wilson is back in training and that he could be involved in the semi-final second leg.

“There is a chance [he could feature],” he said.

“We have another training session to get through so we will see. Let’s get through training before we make a decision.”

Huge boost after Newcastle United’s quiet January

Whether he is involved or not against Arsenal, it is a huge boost to at least have Wilson back in the conversation.

His recent injuries have been hugely frustrating, but Eddie Howe will be delighted to have the number nine back.

It comes at a time when Newcastle need attacking reinforcements. Newcastle sold Miguel Almiron in January, but opted not to sign a replacement. That has left the Magpies light of options in the final third.

While Wilson obviously plays through the middle rather than out wide, it at least gives Howe another forward he can turn to. Having Wilson means that Howe can play two up top or move Alexander Isak out wide, while it also gives him the chance to rest his top scorer.

But the main obstacle for Wilson will be staying fit. There simply cannot be any more setbacks between now and the end of the season.

If Wilson can stay fit, he will score goals. That will be Newcastle United’s big hope.
