Newcastle United cannot catch a break on the fitness front.
Eddie Howe had just managed to recover Harvey Barnes from a foot injury to have ruled him out since September but the injury curse struck again against Luton.
Indeed, only days after Alexander Isak was forced off against Aston Villa, Newcastle lost Anthony Gordon at half-time in the 4-4 draw with The Hatters.
Gordon, so impressive this season, came off with what Howe has now confirmed as a twisted ankle and was duly replaced by Callum Wilson at the interval.
He ultimately left St James’ Park on crutches and Howe later shared more insight.

Speaking after the game, (via The Chronicle), Howe said: “I did not necessarily see the incident but he was in a lot of pain at half-time so he had to come off.
“No idea [how long he’ll be out]. He saw enough for him to come off, that was his decision and knew he could not continue. Obviously, we hope it is not bad but we will miss him.”
Anthony Gordon: Fresh blow for Newcastle
While it was certainly promising to see Barnes and Wilson return to strengthen the squad, losing Gordon for any length of time would be such a huge blow.
Only Isak has scored more than the £40m star this season, with that fee spent in January 2023 now looking like an absolute bargain. Just Kieran Trippier, meanwhile, has recorded more assists for Newcastle.
Gordon has been one of the standout players across the Premier League all season.
To not have him around for what look like winnable games against Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth could see Howe’s side slip up even further, which would surely leave them with too much to do in the hunt for a European spot.
