Newcastle United’s injury crisis shows no sign of letting up.

Indeed, just as Harvey Barnes made his long-awaited return to action, Newcastle were dealt another big blow during the 4-4 draw with Luton on Saturday.

Not only was dropping two points in a game they really should be winning disappointing but Eddie Howe saw another key player suffer an injury.

Days after Alexander Isak was forced off against Aston Villa, Anthony Gordon left St James’ Park on crutches after being replaced by Callum Wilson at half-time.

As you might imagine, Howe couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Newcastle injury news: Eddie Howe shocked

Speaking after the game (via The Chronicle), Howe admitted of Gordon’s injury: “It seems like we get one back then lose another one.

“We’ve never been able to get to a point where we feel we’ve got full strength. Today we had Callum and Harvey on the bench then we lose Anthony. I hope that the injury for Anthony is not serious and that Callum and Harvey came through their cameos OK.”

Newcastle injuries: One step forward and two steps back

While it was promising to see both Barnes and Wilson back, it’s hugely frustrating to potentially lose Gordon.

With Isak out too, the options look slim. Wilson has proven unreliable on the fitness front throughout his time at Newcastle and putting too much strain on Barnes after how long he’s been out would be a worry.

Howe has been dealt some torrid luck this season. Though no one will be looking for excuses, there’s surely not much he can do about the sheer number of problems he’s had to deal with.

Hopefully, Gordon will return soon. Newcastle could have a lot to play for if they can put a good run together in the business end of the season.
