Eddie Howe blocked Newcastle United player exit after late bid, he could get a new contract now

Eddie Howe rejected the chance to sell a Newcastle United player even after the British transfer window had shut.

Indeed, the defensive options in the Newcastle United squad look very strong now following the summer arrival of Malick Thiaw.

Thiaw impressed on his first start for Newcastle United against Bournemouth, with Howe previously talking of how excited he is to work with the German international.

Sven Botman’s return from injury is another big boost. At his best, the Dutchman is a fine defender and was arguably one of the best in the Premier League during his first season at the club.

With Fabian Schar and Dan Burn as impressive as ever despite their advancing years, Newcastle look well-stocked defensively.

However, the Newcastle United manager was keen to keep Jamaal Lascelles at the club.

Eddie Howe stopped Jamaal Lascelles leaving Newcastle

Lascelles joined Newcastle way back in 2014, though didn’t officially start playing for them until a year after that as he was initially loaned back to Nottingham Forest.

The 31-year-old made his first appearance in well over a year on Sunday when he came off the bench during Newcastle’s 0-0 draw with Bournemouth, having suffered a serious knee injury in 2024.

Lascelles was linked with a move to Trabzonspor even after the English transfer window shut in September, with clubs in Turkey available to sign players for a few days after that.

However, according to The Chronicle, Howe blocked any potential move for Lascelles – who has a chance at winning a contract extension this season – even after an offer was made. As it stands, the former Forest youngster’s deal at St James’ Park will expire in the summer of 2026.

Jamaal Lascelles loved what Newcastle United fans did for him

Lascelles is clearly an important figure behind the scenes, given he still has a leadership role at the club.

After winning the Carabao Cup, fellow dressing room leaders Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes went directly over to him to lift the trophy. That certainly indicated that he remains a big presence.

To just talk about his impact away from the cameras would be unfair, too. Lascelles was brilliant for Newcastle during their famous 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 and rarely put a foot wrong when called upon prior to his injury.

Back in May, Lascelles admitted Newcastle fans made him emotional because of their support for him when he was on the bench during a Premier League win over Chelsea.

“To be fair, what I’ve been through, I was just so happy to be on the bench,” he said. “I got a great reception from the fans. It was quite emotional for me.”

The 31-year-old is Newcastle’s longest-serving player, and it would not be a surprise to see him earn an extension.
