Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted that he has got a brilliant relationship with Fabian Schar after he signed a new contract with the club.

Newcastle recently announced a new deal for the defender, who has put pen to paper on a one-year extension. He will now be a Toon player until 2025, much to the delight of some of his teammates.

It is excellent news that Fabian Schar is staying put, as he has developed into a key player under Eddie Howe. That was not the case when Steve Bruce was in charge, with the Swiss centre-back unable to get in the team back then.

But now he is a starter every week, and contributed to one of Newcastle’s most famous wins ever. He scored the Magpies’ fourth goal in the 4-1 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain back in October.

The 32-year-old has been one of Newcastle’s most reliable players this season – virtually an ever-present during a campaign where the Magpies have been riddled with injuries. He has missed just two games, both of which came in the Carabao Cup.

Schar even excelled as a left-sided centre-back during Sven Botman’s absence, much to the delight of Howe, who is delighted to see him extend his stay on Tyneside.

Eddie Howe delighted to retain ‘confident’ Fabian Schar

Ahead of Newcastle United’s game against Manchester City, Howe spoke to the media. He was asked to describe Fabian Schar after he signed his new contract.

“He is very confident without being arrogant, he believes in himself“, he said.

“He is the same as a person, he is a great guy and I have built a great relationship with him. He is highly intelligent, and I think his intelligence comes across on the pitch. He makes very good decisions; he is technically outstanding.

“He deserves this new deal and hopefully it’s a start of another good period for him.“

Schar is one of Newcastle’s best signings ever

When you remember that Schar only cost the club £3million, he has to go down as one of Newcastle United’s best signings ever. He has proven to be an absolute bargain, and he is a player who fans love to watch.

Not only is he an immense defender, he also an outstanding technician, as Howe says. His ability on the ball is astonishing for a centre-back, and he has turned out to be a real offensive weapon over the years.

As Howe says, Schar plays with such confidence and intelligence, and it is excellent to know that he has signed a new contract.
