Don Hutchison claims Liverpool should have signed £81.5m attacker instead of Alexander Isak from Newcastle

Liverpool have now been told they’ve made a mistake by signing both Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike ahead of Newcastle United this summer.

Newcastle United tried to sign Ekitike but watched him move to Anfield instead. If that wasn’t bad enough, Isak ended up following him to Merseyside.

While Ekitike has impressed during the first weeks of his career at Liverpool, former Newcastle star Isak is yet to get up to speed.

Crystal Palace fans mocked Isak during their win over Liverpool on Saturday and the Sweden international was largely ineffective on Wednesday night when they lost to Galatasaray.

Newcastle wanted Ekitike and Isak to play together but, so far, it’s not really working out.

Indeed, pundit Don Hutchison believes the Reds made a mistake.

Liverpool told they should have signed Julian Alvarez

Taking to social media platform X, the pundit suggested Liverpool would have been better off signing Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez instead of both Ekitike and Isak.

The Argentina international left Manchester City for the Spanish capital in 2024 and has since scored 36 goals in 65 games for them. According to BBC Sport, he cost Atletico £81.5million – significantly cheaper than what Isak cost Liverpool.

Hutchison would go onto suggest Ekitike and Isak are simply too similar in profile to work together.

Newcastle United proven right about Alexander Isak

Those inside the club knew a slow start to the season was coming, even if Isak were to have stayed at St James’ Park.

Indeed, Newcastle do not think Isak will be fully fit before October, after the forward had made himself unavailable for the club during pre-season.

At some point, it will surely click. Isak is too good a player to continue to struggle and Liverpool have an outstanding team to field alongside him.

For now, however, Newcastle fans will no doubt be keeping a keen eye on his relative struggles.
