Even though Sunderland are in League One, Newcastle are still battling them for transfers, with Dion Sanderson the subject of a bid from the Magpies.

When the Black Cats were in the Premier League, they would often challenge the Magpies in the transfer window.

For example, Papiss Cisse was linked with Sunderland before becoming the Newcastle number nine.

In recent years, Newcastle and Sunderland have been kept apart.

2017 was a sliding doors moment. As Newcastle won promotion back to the Premier League, Sunderland began a meteoric slide down the Football League, which was all captured on Netflix.

Since then, the closest thing we’ve had to a derby is the Magpies’ youth side taking on Sunderland in the Football League Trophy.

Meanwhile, Allan Saint-Maximin takes any chance he can get to mock the Toon’s rivals, despite never actually facing them.

But in the summer of 2021, Newcastle and Sunderland are competing for the same player.

Where will Dion Sanderson end up?

According to the Daily Mail, the Mackems have had a £1million bid for Sanderson rejected.

The defender spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, and was one of their best players before getting injured.

Sunderland fans are desperate for Sanderson to come back, but he might be heading further north.

That’s because Newcastle have reportedly made a bigger offer for the 21-year-old.

The Daily Mail state that the Magpies have offered £1.5million, with Wolves wanting closer to £2million.

The Athletic have since added that Newcastle’s offer has been rejected.

While Sunderland may be able to offer Sanderson first-team football, it would be in League One.

Newcastle can offer Sanderson a chance in the Premier League, which he’s yet to receive at Wolves.

Sanderson is an interesting target for Newcastle, and Sunderland fans are very worried he could be heading to St James’ Park.
