Darren Bent says £45m Newcastle player should be going to Euro 2024 this summer

Darren Bent has claimed that there’s a Newcastle United player who simply must be heading to the Euro 2024 tournament this summer.

Despite not reaching some people’s expectations so far this season, there has been some individual brilliance throughout this campaign in Newcastle’s squad.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent has been so impressed with Anthony Gordon’s form for Newcastle and insisted that he must go to Euro 2024 with the England squad.

In what has been a breakthrough season for the winger, Gordon has been absolutely key to Newcastle’s attack this season and one of the few players who have avoided any big injuries.

Because of that availability, Gordon has found his rhythm in the Premier League this season and is really starting to impress with his efforts in the final third, something he was heavily criticised for when he was at Everton.

The 22-year-old has already racked up 14 goal contributions (including the two penalties he won against Brentford and Burnley) and is making a great case for him to be selected in Gareth Southgate’s next England squad.

Bent is a big fan of what Gordon is doing at the moment and argued that at this rate he may be selected ahead of Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish based off of their current form.

On the show, Bent said: “He has to go. What does Anthony Gordon give you? He gives you goals and everything else.”

Gordon needs to do the same again for Newcastle

Despite the number of defeats Newcastle have suffered, right now there’s not a lot of pressure on Gordon to improve his performances, he needs to keep doing what he’s doing and eventually the wins will come.

If he can repeat in the second half of the season what he has done in the first, getting close to 30 goal contributions in the Premier League, it would not only be a brilliant achievement it would give Newcastle a good chance of finishing in a European spot.

It also would force Southgate into making some tough decisions, but purely based off of what we’ve seen so far, it would be a very poor choice to select someone else over Gordon who is playing out of his skin at the moment.

Some may argue he doesn’t have the experience yet, but scoring goals against Liverpool, Arsenal, Man United and Manchester City suggests he’s already a big-time player.
