Newcastle United will seriously be able to splash the cash this summer – if they sell one of their top stars.
It is not an ideal situation, but the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules mean that selling someone for big money is Newcastle’s best route towards a major rebuild this summer.
That is why there is so much speculation over Bruno Guimaraes leaving the club, although it has been reported that the Magpies’ preference is to keep the 26-year-old at St James’ Park.
Another mega name who could leave is Alexander Isak. He is Newcastle United’s most expensive signing ever, and is widely considered to be the second best striker in the entire Premier League behind Erling Haaland.
Like Bruno, Isak is a superstar, and they would both command massive fees. In fact, we know Bruno would go for at least £100million because of his release clause.
But if you had to pick one to go this summer, who would it be? Alan Shearer has made his decision, albeit reluctantly.
Alan Shearer picks who he would rather sell between Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak
Alan Shearer has been speaking about Newcastle’s financial situation on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football, and was asked a rather interesting question by host Gary Lineker.
He asked: “With FFP holding Newcastle’s spending power back if they were forced to sell either Bruno or Isak in the summer to allow further investment which would you choose to go if you were in charge?”
“Don’t ask questions like that,” Shearer replied.
“They might have to you know, depending what happens, I think those rules are going to be changed and changed pretty quickly. They just don’t work and they are outdated. Too many are complaining that they just aren’t right.
“But if they didn’t change then I imagine Newcastle would have to sell a big hitter somewhere along the line.
“Bruno gets the people and the people get him, that’s why he’s got such a good relationship. They see him as one of their own and that’s why they love him, so I wouldn’t want to see Bruno sold he’s a really top player. So it would have to be Isak.”

It would be a horrible decision for Newcastle United to make
It is a horrible question. Bruno and Isak are both heroes on Tyneside, and seeing either of them leave would be heartbreaking.
A Bruno departure would probably hit fans harder, as he has such an incredible bond with the Toon Army. He is a talisman, and the one player who makes us tick.
But Isak is special too. Those Thierry Henry comparisons are not lazy, they are because he is so similar to the Arsenal legend.
In a perfect world, neither leave. And Shearer hopes that is the case, hinting that a change to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules could be on the way.
That would benefit Newcastle, at a time when they might be forced to sell one of their best players to allow them to spend in the transfer market.
