Dan Burn now admits £27m Man United player is technically so much better than him

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has been brutally honest about his ability whilst discussing his England chances.

The 31-year-old has never represented his country, and has once again been ignored by Gareth Southgate.

He is not the only Newcastle player who has been snubbed, with Nick Pope, Sean Longstaff and Anthony Gordon also missing out.

They could all stake a strong claim to be in the squad, as could Burn. He has enjoyed a brilliant start to the season, and has actually scored two goals already. The left-back also nearly got a wonderful assist at the weekend, but Alexander Isak could not find the net after Burn’s perfect pass.

Dependable defensively and constantly improving on the ball, you could make a strong case for Burn being in the England squad. And you could make an even stronger case when you consider that Luke Shaw and Ben Chiwell are both injured.

But Southgate has opted against picking the Toon defender, and now Burn has addressed his international aspirations.

Burn has spoke to the Chronicle about possibly playing for England, and has compared himself to Shaw and Chilwell.

“I am focused on Newcastle,” he said.

“But I feel that I am at a level where I could be playing for England. The England manager comes to all the games and I am not getting picked though.

“It’s obviously something he does not like or he does not fancy. But I am happy playing for Newcastle United and I am going to keep putting performances in.

“I understand that there are levels to play for England. We’ve got some very good left-backs. We have Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell who technically I feel I am nowhere near.”

Burn must focus on Newcastle

As Burn says, he is focused on Newcastle. That is all he can do. Obviously playing for your country is a dream, but that will only come with good performances at club level.

However, it feels like Burn’s chance for England will never come. He has been outstanding ever since joining Newcastle, but has constantly been ignored by Southgate. Perhaps his age goes against him.

Burn thinks he is far less technical than Chilwell and Shaw, who cost Man United £27million in 2014.

That is fair enough, but Burn has other qualities that make him stand out. He is sensational in one-on-one situations. Even the quickest and trickiest wingers struggle to get beyond him.

The lanky defender is a leader and consistent too, which is why he has been a regular ever since Eddie Howe brought him to St James’ Park.

Southgate has watched Newcastle enough to see Burn’s talents, but he clearly just does not want to pick him.
