‘Special’ Newcastle man now deserves international call-up, he’s in unbelievable form

Gareth Southgate is set to announce his next England squad with an international break due after this weekend’s round of fixtures and has plenty of Newcastle United players to choose from.

Newcastle United can boast some fantastic English players who are in superb form right now who should be in line for a call-up from the England gaffer.

Nick Pope was dropped last time around but has been superb since Gareth Southgate left him out of the last England squad so should be in line for a return to the set-up.

Sean Longstaff should be in Southgate’s England plans

Kieran Trippier is a no-brainer, especially off the back of being WhoScored’s player of the month. Callum Wilson will be in line for a call-up but his fitness issues may keep him out.

Anthony Gordon has been a good shout from a lot of fans, but there’s another name that should be in the mix and that’s Sean Longstaff.

The 25-year-old’s return to Eddie Howe‘s starting line-up has coincided with the team’s turnaround in form and run of clean sheets and it’s unlikely a coincidence.

Longstaff really came into his own as a Newcastle midfielder last season and after a slow start to the season as he returned from injury, since becoming fully fit he’s regained that form and bettered it.

Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi recently hailed Longstaff as ‘special‘ on the midfielder’s Instagram, and it’s hard to deny it.

Longstaff has been incredible since Eddie Howe took over

Longstaff looked dead and buried at Newcastle under Steve Bruce. The former Manchester United defender absolutely sapped all of Longstaff’s love for the game and almost ruined his career.

Thankfully Eddie Howe was patient and persistent and is now reaping the rewards as Longstaff has become instrumental to Newcastle’s success.

So while we all know it won’t happen as Gareth Southgate wouldn’t know an in-form player if he booted a ball of his chin, it would be amazing to see, and fully earned if Longstaff was called up for England.
