Chris Waddle was very impressed with Tino Livramento’s display at left-back for Newcastle United in their 1-1 draw against PSG on Tuesday night.

Newcastle had to be at their best if they were to come away with anything against PSG, and Livramento was a huge part of earning Newcastle a point at the Parc des Princes.

Chris Waddle claimed the 21-year-old was ‘absolutely outstanding’ on 5 Live as the defender played a very important role at the back but also in the build-up to Newcastle’s goal.

Livramento was key for opening goal

After Newcastle weathered the quick start from PSG, things started to open up for the Magpies who had grown into the game and began creating a few chances.

Livramento showed his attacking quality after a driving run into PSG’s box before laying off Miguel Almiron whose shot was parried by Gianluigi Donnarumma and then tapped home by Alexander Isak.

Former Newcastle man Waddle heaped praise on Livramento for his role in the goal.

On 5 Live, Waddle said: “By the way, what a good goal. Livramento, absolutely outstanding run!

“Great change of direction, great footwork, Almiron shot and as you say, Donnarumma, what is he doing?

“He pushed it out, he could catch that, he could throw his cap on it, it just pitches in front of him, it’s a poor save.

“And give Isak credit, he’s the one who follows in, he thinks yeah I’ve got a chance, I’ll do what strikers do and it’s a simple side foot from three yards into the back of the net. Livramento, absolutely top class.”

Livramento top class for Newcastle again

Livramento hasn’t played a huge number of games yet for Newcastle since signing from Southampton for £32m, but in the games he has started he’s been one of the team’s best performers, and again against PSG he showed just how good he can be.

The defender was again playing at left-back like he did in the 4-1 victory against Chelsea at the weekend and looked like he had been playing there regularly all his life.

Not only is he proving to be a brilliant defender having taken on Ousmane Dembele and Achraf Hakimi, but his attacking runs have also given Newcastle a different outlet than Kieran Trippier down the right.

It may not be a long term solution for Eddie Howe who will want the young man to play in his natural position at right-back, but it’s great to know that he can trust him to play on the left as well if needed.

At 21-years-old, Livramento can only get better and if he’s putting in these kinds of performances in such high pressure games already, you wonder how good he could become in the next three or four years under the guidance of Trippier.
