Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Brighton star Leandro Trossard, and Chris Sutton would not be shocked if he made the move to St James’ Park.

It was recently claimed by 90min that Dan Ashworth wants to be reunited with the 27-year-old, whose current contract expires in 2024.

There has since been a further development. The Northern Echo have stated that Newcastle will launch an inquiry for the forward before the January transfer window opens.

Eddie Howe’s side are performing brilliantly this season, and look to be in contention to qualify for Europe. One or two January signings could boost Newcastle’s European hopes, and Trossard would certainly be a good addition.

The Magpies need further options in attack, and the winger is enjoying a fantastic start to the campaign with the Seagulls.

Trossard currently has seven Premier League goals to his name. That’s the same amount as Miguel Almiron, who is enjoying an incredibly rich vein of form.

Now Newcastle want Trossard to join Almiron on Tyneside, and pundit Chris Sutton believes it is a transfer that could happen at the start of 2023.

Sutton comments on Trossard possibly going to Newcastle

Former Blackburn striker Sutton has appeared on BBC Sounds’ Monday Night Club, and discussed the possibility of Trossard swapping Brighton for Newcastle.

“He’s been absolutely flying this season and I suppose if you look at Brighton he’s been their main player, their best goal scorer, he’s versatile,” Sutton said.

“Of course, (Roberto) De Zerbi will want to hold onto him, but with Brighton doing so well, and Trossard doing so well, it wouldn’t be a total shock if he went up there (to Newcastle).”

Move to St James’ Park a step up for Trossard

With how well Trossard is doing and how well Newcastle are doing, the pair could be a match made in heaven.

The Magpies need another forward option to boost their European charge, while he will no doubt have ambitions of taking the next step up in his career.

While a move to the Premier League’s elite might be beyond him, a transfer to Newcastle could be just right. He feels like he would be another sensible addition to the Toon project, where the recruitment has been spot on over the past 12 months.

It would be disappointing for Brighton to lose their ‘main player’ as Sutton calls him, but that is unfortunately the way it goes for a club like them. They are used to losing their top stars by now, and if anything they should take it as a compliment that they could get these players before anyone else did – or Ashworth did, the man Newcastle have now poached as well.

Trossard wouldn’t be a blockbuster signing for Newcastle. However, he could be a very astute one when the transfer window opens.
