Chris Sutton tells Dan Burn what is being ‘overblown’ at Newcastle United right now

Newcastle United are not in a good place right now.

The Magpies have failed to win any of their previous five Premier League games, with Eddie Howe‘s side suffering consecutive defeats to Brighton and Chelsea.

This run of form means that Newcastle United are now down to 12th in the Premier League.

It has been quite the slide down the table. Going into the Fulham game, Newcastle could have gone top of the league. They subsequently lost that fixture, and have not tasted victory since that turnaround against Wolves.

However, performances have improved. At the start of the season, Newcastle were playing poorly but getting results. Now they are playing much better but have nothing to show for it.

And that is why Chris Sutton is not worried about what is going on at St James’ Park.

Sutton has addressed Newcastle United’s recent form on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, where Dan Burn was a guest.

The former striker was keen to tell Burn that Newcastle have played well in their previous three games, and that they just need a bit of luck to go their way.

“Things have been overblown a bit with regards to Newcastle,” he said.

“The last three games, the players would have come off… You drew at Everton, thinking ‘blimey, how did we not win that’. Numerous opportunities. It was the same against Brighton. Create chances but not taking them.

“Even watching the highlights against Chelsea, there were some incredible opportunities. They’re head-scratchers. In terms of the performance, they have been there. The players will be feeling they’re not far away and just need a little bit of luck on their side.”

Tough fixtures for Newcastle United

Sutton does make a good point. Newcastle had chances to beat Everton, but wasted them. Anthony Gordon missed a penalty, which proved to be pivotal.

The Magpies then had chances to beat Brighton but wasted them.

Even against Chelsea, Newcastle had opportunities. Alexander Isak wasted the biggest, as he selfishly tried to score himself in the second half rather than give Joelinton a tap in.

While the results have been disappointing, there has been plenty to admire. Sadly, that counts for nothing in terms of points.

And while Howe will be taking hope from his team’s performance, the upcoming Premier League fixtures still present a major challenge.

Newcastle’s next three league games are tough, and, as we all know, there are no guarantees in the Premier League.

While Sutton believes that concern over Newcastle’s current position is ‘overblown’, the discontent will only grow louder the longer the Magpies go without victory.
