Dan Burn says ‘world class’ Newcastle player will be ‘disappointed’ with his performance vs Brighton

There is plenty of reason for Dan Burn to be disappointed after Newcastle United’s defeat to Brighton.

The Magpies lost 1-0 to Fabian Hurzeler’s side on Saturday, with the Seagulls really showing their class to pick up an impressive three points.

The goal that Newcastle United conceded was cheap. While Brighton can play beautiful football, there was no major need to on this occasion. One quick free quick over the top followed by a one-two resulted in Danny Welbeck scoring what proved to be the only goal of the game.

It was poor defending, while Newcastle were also below par at the other end of the pitch. Newcastle United were terrible in front of goal against Brighton, squandering major chances to change the outcome of the game.

A lot of those chances fell to Alexander Isak, who was back in the Newcastle United starting lineup after a broken toe.

He passed up multiple opportunities to score, including one when he was played clean through by Bruno Guimaraes.

It was a really disappointing day for Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, who passed up chances that he would have scored last season. He netted 25 goals last season, which resulted in Dan Burn calling Alexander Isak ‘world class’.

So far this season, the 25-year-old has scored just once.

Dan Burn shares honest verdict on Isak’s performance

However, Burn is not worried about Isak’s struggles in front of goal.

Following the game, Burn spoke to iNews about Isak missing key chances during Newcastle’s defeat to Brighton.

“I think you’re more worried if he isn’t getting those chances,” he said.

“I think with a guy of Alex’s quality he will be disappointed he hasn’t taken even the half chances he’s had. But I never worry about Alex, I’m sure it won’t stop him.”

Newcastle striker could soon be inspired to improve

Isak should be a disappointed about Saturday. A player of his quality should not be missing the chances he had.

Overall, it was a really disappointing return for Isak. He looked well off the pace, with Isak showcasing a real lack of sharpness that hurt Newcastle in the final third.

In truth, it was perhaps the type of performance you would expect from a player who has only just returned from a broken toe, in a season in which he has started slowly.

Newcastle’s number 14 did not look sure of himself against Brighton, which is not something you would have said last season. That killer instinct in front of goal appears to be missing, and Isak needs to find it as soon as possible.

Perhaps the return of Callum Wilson will inspire Isak to improve. The 32-year-old striker is due to return from injury, with Eddie Howe admitting that Wilson has looked good in training.
