Premier League darts player Chris Dobey has thanked Newcastle United fan group Wor Flags for giving him an incredible homecoming.
While the international break has meant no St James’ Park displays for Wor Flags, they took the chance to pay tribute to local lad and Newcastle United fan Dobey.
He is involved in the 2023 Premier League Darts tournament, which travels the United Kingdom and Europe for 17 weeks.
Week eight saw the event take place at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, which meant a hero’s return for Bedlington-born Dobey.
Wor Flags welcome Chris Dobey back to Newcastle
Dobey, who follows the Magpies home and away, was involved in the fourth match of the night. He took on reigning world champion Michael Smith in the best of 11 legs.

The 32-year-old normally walks onto the stage to PJ And Duncan hit ‘Let’s Get Ready To Rumble’, but changed his music for the event in his home city.
Just like his beloved Newcastle United players do at St James’ Park, Dobey walked out to Mark Knopfler’s Local Hero while members of Wor Flags took to the stage. The noise inside the arena was fantastic, and it was a worthy welcome for a Geordie superstar.
It inspired him to victory too, as Dobey beat Smith 6-4 to advance to the semi finals later in the night. However, he was then beaten by eventual winner Gerwyn Price.
Dobey thanks Wor Flags for what they did
While he was not victorious in Newcastle, it was still a special night for Dobey, who has since took to Twitter.
He wrote: “Wow what a night. Newcastle you were amazing, just want to thank everyone for the support it was unreal, also massive thanks to Wor Flags for playing their part last night means a lot. Not gonna lie I think the occasion got the better of me last night but I promise I’ll bounce back from this.”
While Wor Flags are best known for their incredible St James’ Park displays, they also do a brilliant job of paying tribute to local heroes.
It was great to see them involved in Dobey’s walk-on, and it created a brilliant pre-match atmosphere.
They have also done the same for North Shields’ Sam Fender, who is set to perform at St James’ Park this summer. No doubt they will have a presence during the gig.
Now Wor Flags will turn their attention back to Newcastle United, with a huge home game coming up against Manchester United on April 2nd.
