Wor Flags are back at Newcastle United following last month’s takeover.

The group ended their displays in 2019, walking away from the club following the departure of Rafa Benitez.

But now they’re back, and ready for their third display of the season.

Their return against Tottenham was fantastic, unveiling a banner with lyrics to famous Jimmy Nail song ‘Big River’.

Against Chelsea, we saw a return of the giant flag that was used before Rafa Benitez’s final home game against Liverpool in 2019.

And now fans will be excited to see what they have in store for Eddie Howe’s first home game on Saturday against Brentford.

But before that, they had another display on Thursday night.

‘Sam Fender, he’s one of our own’

Local musician Sam Fender was in town on Thursday, playing a hometown gig at a packed out Utilita Arena. The show was meant to take place early last year, but was delayed due to COVID.

But the Toon fan finally got the chance to walk out on stage last night, but not before he got a true Geordie welcome.

As the lights went down, giant flags emerged at the front of the crowd as Wor Flags prepared to welcome Fender to the stage. Meanwhile, Johnny ‘Blue hat’ Davis and two other men played Local Hero ahead of Fender’s arrival.

It was like a matchday. The atmosphere was incredible, as a huge roar erupted following the final note of Local Hero. It was like welcoming the players on to the pitch, but instead it was just a young lad with a guitar.

The introduction added to what was a special night, and Wor Flags will be hoping to play just as big a role on Saturday when the Magpies take on Brentford.
