Charlie Cresswell says 22-year-old Newcastle man is ‘quickest thing I’ve ever seen’

England’s Young Lions get their European Championships underway today and Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon will be hoping to be in the starting XI.

The England U21s take on Czech Republic at 5pm today with Newcastle‘s £45million January signing, Anthony Gordon hoping to be involved in the tournament from the off.

If his Young Lions teammate, Charlie Cresswell’s assessment of Gordon is anything to go by he should be in contention. The Leeds United man was asked for his thoughts on his teammates for the England Football website, saying of Gordon: “Anthony is electric. He is the quickest thing I’ve ever seen. He’s so sharp and he’s got a great attitude.”

The comment about Gordon’s attitude will turn some heads

Gordon’s frightening pace is well known, but it’s the line about him having a great attitude that may turn some heads.

The 22-year-old famously had a touchline bust-up with Eddie Howe last season which led to some fans and pundits saying he should be sold and that he is a disgrace.

Howe himself didn’t seem too bothered by the ordeal, speaking to Gordon in private and telling the media that’s as far as it would go. For some, however, it was a crime against humanity and Gordon’s attitude has been questioned ever since.

Gordon’s sub-par form didn’t help his case with those fans either, although I’m sure they all cheered his goal on the last game of the season.

Gordon is getting himself into shape for next season

Since then though, Gordon spoke about the different level of fitness that’s required of him at Newcastle and spoke of his determination to get up to speed over the summer in order to be ready for Howe’s intense training sessions and push his way into the first team.

That’s a player with the right attitude. Yes, he’s a hot head, but that’s youthful arrogance and he will learn to keep that in check. As long as he’s always willing to do what’s required of him and push as hard as possible, that’s the part of his attitude that matters to me.

Hopefully Gordon gets his shot in the England team this afternoon and goes on to have a great tournament so he can bring that confidence back to Newcastle.
